Sempra Energy Joins ONE Future to Help Further Industry Efforts to Reduce Methane Emissions
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 27, 2021, – Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) today announced that it has joined Our Nation’s Energy Future (ONE Future) coalition. ONE Future is comprised of 36 companies focused on collectively achieving a science-based average rate of methane emissions across their facilities equivalent to 1% (or less) of total natural gas production.
“As we work to mitigate methane emissions across the Sempra family of companies, we look forward to engaging with ONE Future and other member companies to identify and implement innovative solutions to help address some of our industry’s toughest challenges,” said Sharon Tomkins, vice president of sustainability for Sempra Energy. “These efforts will help further our goals to deliver sustainable value and enable the delivery of affordable, lower-carbon energy to millions of consumers.”
As a ONE Future member, Sempra Energy plans to report its 2020 methane emissions results as part of the Transmission/Storage and Distribution sectors. The company also reports its methane emissions data in its annual Corporate Sustainability Report.
“We are proud to have Sempra Energy as a new ONE Future member. We are confident that Sempra’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions will strengthen our efforts to continue to reduce methane emissions as the coalition continues to grow,” said Richard Hyde, executive director of ONE Future.
Through the efforts of coalition members, ONE Future has surpassed its 1% methane emissions reduction goal each of the three years that it has reported its methane intensity. The 2019 Methane Intensity Report, released in November 2020, registered a 2019 methane intensity number of 0.334%, beating its 1% goal by 67%. This demonstrates that the natural gas industry has reduced methane emissions while increasing production and throughput and supplying much-needed energy to the U.S. and around the globe.
