December 3, 2025 – Our Nation’s Energy Future (ONE Future), a coalition of natural gas companies taking action to reduce methane emissions, today released its annual reporting of methane intensities. The coalition, which has published aggregated data on methane emissions across its membership for eight years, reported a collective methane intensity of 0.280% in 2024, reflecting a 15.4% reduction compared to the previous year. Our member companies represent roughly 40% of the United States natural gas value chain.
“At ONE Future, we remain committed and proactive in reducing emissions, having met and exceeded our 2025 target once again this year,” said ONE Future Executive Director Jim Kibler. “The results demonstrate our ability to implement cost-effective measures to reduce emissions across the value chain, and that we don’t have to choose between reducing emissions and providing access to the affordable natural gas Americans rely on every day.”
In 2024, there was an overall decrease in ONE Future’s value chain intensity due to decreases in methane intensities across all five segments. The largest decrease came from the Production segment, which was primarily driven by a reduction in emissions from pneumatic devices. Additional emissions reductions were observed across segments from equipment leaks, dehydrators, blowdowns/dig-ins, combustion equipment, and distribution/storage stations.
Despite our significant progress, there is still more work to be done. Strong partnerships and collaboration with academic, industry, and technology partners are crucial and allow us to continue learning from one another and improve our work moving forward.
This year, ONE Future completed a marginal abatement cost study on methane emissions prevention, detection, and abatement technologies, in partnership with ICF International. Preliminary results from the study highlight our members’ success in deploying cost-effective solutions to reduce emissions. Its findings will guide our continued progress by providing deeper insights into how ONE Future members and other operators can achieve meaningful methane reductions through innovative technologies.
ONE Future member companies in five segments across the natural gas value chain achieved the following 2024 methane intensity results in comparison to their baseline goals:
- Production: The 2024 methane intensity was 0.040%, beating the segment’s goal of 0.283% by 85.9%. ONE Future’s member companies represent more than 25% of the natural gas produced in the U.S. in 2024.
- Gathering and Boosting: The 2024 methane intensity was 0.060%, beating the segment’s goal of 0.080% by 25.0%. ONE Future members represent 40% of the natural gas gathered in the U.S. in 2024.
- Processing: The 2024 methane intensity was 0.019%, beating the segment’s goal of 0.111% by 82.9%. ONE Future members represent 29% of the natural gas processed in the U.S. in 2024.
- Transmission and Storage: The 2024 methane intensity was 0.073%, beating the segment’s goal of 0.301% by 75.8%. ONE Future members represent 61% of total transmission pipeline miles in the U.S. in 2024.
- Distribution: The 2024 methane intensity was 0.088%, beating the segment’s goal of 0.225% by 60.9%. ONE Future members represent 33% of gas delivered to end users in the U.S. in 2024 and 35% of miles of mains in the U.S. in 2024.

About ONE Future: ONE Future was formed when seven companies came together in 2014 with a focus to collectively achieve a science-based average rate of methane emissions across our facilities equivalent to one percent or less of total natural gas production. Since our formation, we have grown to represent roughly 40% of the U.S. natural gas value chain, accounting for some of the largest natural gas producers, transmission, and distribution companies in the country. ONE Future’s data represent a geographically diverse and material share of the U.S. natural gas supply chain. For more information, visit onefuture.us.
